Gregg Suyenaga Bio

Gregg Suyenaga started in the automotive field, while going to Gahr high school in Cerritos California. He became interested in drag racing with the help of his auto shop teacher and current NHRA funny car star Gary Densham.

His first adventure drag racing was in 1979 with a Chevy luv truck utilizing a 355 Chevy motor. It got a lot attention because it was one of the only trucks that could be driven almost anywhere, even though it had a narrowed 9" Ford rear end that could handle 14x32 tires fully "tucked in". When the small-block could not satisfy his hunger for more power, he put a 482 big-block Chevy power plant under the hood and turned it into a full time race car, capable of running 9.50’s.

His next car was a full tube chassised, strut front end Vega that he originally intended to run in Super Gas with the same motor & transmission, but it ran mid 8’s, so he switched classes to the dragster-dominated Super Comp. While watching a new class called Super Eliminator (7.90) he decided to switch classes again and ran a brand new dragster, brand new 532 Chevy motor, with a best finish of 3rd in NHRA Division 7.

Still having the hunger for quicker ET’s & speeds, he sold that dragster and ordered a custom-built Victory Race Cars dragster, which he still owns. It has features that are NOT on any other Dragster. In its very first outing the car had won its first race at the Coca-Cola National open @ LACR. The car had an Alcohol-injected 511 Chevy motor and had run a best of 7.46 @ 179 mph.

In 2003 another new class came to the Pacific division 7, called Top Comp. The format was for quickest qualified 48-car field. In the past few years the class has grown to include up to 70 cars trying to qualify for the 48-car field. Again, wanting to go quicker & faster, Gregg had decided to go with a blown & injected alcohol motor. On April 23rd 2006 one of Gregg’s goals was finally reached; with a very mild tune up & less than normal blower speed the car ran over 200.00 mph in Las Vegas (3800 feet altitude).

Since then the car has run low 6.80’s everywhere including at Fontana Dragway, even during this summer’s 110+ record heat wave. His 18 year-old son Russell Suyenaga currently drives the car.
